An andiron is a horizontal bar usually made of iron that logs are laid on for burning in an open fireplace. They are usually used in pairs to build up a firedog to hold logs above the hearth in order to improve air circulation. While the purpose is to improve burning efficiency, andirons can add a beautiful accent to any fireplace.
